Hally's thesis

This is way shorter than my thesis usually is. Do you think it's oversimplified, too general, too wordy, or okay(ish)?

  • Freedom of individuality within a society instigates positive development and is necessary for the continued success of that society.

  1. Hally,

What is the alternative to a state where individuality is the cause of positive development? What would the state be reduced to if this was not so? If you included a short statement addressing that alternative, then the intention of this thesis might gain some gusto, and have a bit more depth.

An example would be, "Freedom of individuality within a society instigates positive development, and without it..." Fill in the black with this alternative, or consequence, and even if you do not use it in the actual thesis, it may help you to understand the point you are trying illustrate. I do think that having it as part of your thesis would strengthen it, though.

    1. Thank you. I think I will use the alternative proof for examples of philosophers who's ideas don't agree with my thesis. Like, "if Thesis is not the case, as in so-and-so's work, then bad things like Example will happen..."

  2. I know the essay that follows defends your thesis, but I was wondering if you had intentionally used the word "that" second to last because you believe there are other types of societies in which success is not dependent on individuality. Like in North Korea or something. Cuz it still works in some sense, or not maybe.

    1. I dunno... I think it was to specify that I was still relating to the society the individual was a part of. I don't know if it's necessary or just sounds weird. What would be the alternative and do you have an opinion about which is better now that you have my explanation?

  3. Working toward something good here... I wonder about the relative judgment of one society over another (and the bias toward some sort of participatory democracy) and wonder if that's something you'll need to address (maybe not in the argument, but in the paper)?
Does positive mean good? Can you attribute a morality to the judgment? What is the basis for the morality of this paper?
Do you mean freedom of individuality like having the freedom to be a free spirit (like Nietzsche)? Is the free spirit, the person who really is outside of his/her society, actually a positive benefit for his/her society? In other words, how does the free spirit actually help his society? Doesn't he not care very much about it? How can you make the link between our freedom to express individuality and the betterment of society as a whole? Is a group of people working toward enlightenment (like in Kant) actually a way to say that society as a whole is also working toward enlightenment? But then those people need to keep connected to their society... how do they do that and not be the "free spirit" who leaves?
